What’s your name and who are you?
My name is Ashaine White. I’m from North London and I sing songs that I write!
We’ve asked you to create a playlist of tracks that have inspired your musical journey so far, can you tell us a bit about it?
Sure! This playlist is literally a look into a few of the albums I have on repeat (lol).
My whole life I have been inspired by music with feeling, soul and something unique about it. When I got my own MP3 player at age 11 or 12, I would fill it with music of all genres, but mostly moody and heavily harmony and lyric based. I think this has had a massive impact on me as an artist, most of it being guitar based, the next logical step was for me to pick up one myself at age 14 (much to the dismay of my sister, who I shared a room with) and strum away until something sounded good! I was performing on stages for audiences with my guitar less than two years later.
I’m truly a student of music, and genres like Jazz, Alternative Rock, Grunge and Soul helped me find my voice as a singer and songwriter, basking in the greatness of artists like Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley, and Nirvana taught me the 101 of creating timeless and exciting new music.
If the playlist you created had to be the soundtrack to a film, what film would that be?
Ooh! I love a good coming of age film, it would have to be something moody and beautifully shot. Ah that’s hard! I watched a film called Pariah recently, it follows a young black girl, coming to grips with her young adult-hood and sexuality, all set on a backdrop of gritty New York. I think would be an amazing soundtrack for that, I can see it now, haha!
What do you imagine most people are doing whilst they listen to your music?
I honestly imagine people doing something that makes them feel good, relaxed and soothed while they listen to my music. The dream is for them to listen to my projects, back to front with no distractions. I hope it moves them to do something for themselves, whether that be to pick up that hobby that they loved, but don’t think they have time for anymore, go for a walk, write in their journal, do a hair wash day, or just sit and do nothing.
How would you describe your music in three words?
Authentic, moody, honest!
What does the rest of 2023 hold for you?
2023 is the year of grunge-soul! I have loads more music coming this year from my upcoming EP “Ash” and I’m writing for my next project! I’ll be playing shows all around London and the UK (and we’re manifesting the world). So excited to share it with you!
